The Racine Threat took out their frustrations from last week on the Dane County Hawks Saturday.

Coming off of their first loss of the season, 20-13 to the Lake Geneva Generals last Saturday, the Threat rebounded in a huge way by beating the Hawks 72-26 in a Mid-States Football League game at Ameche Field in Kenosha.

The Threat (2-1 MSFL) scored on their first drive on a 5-yard run by former Racine Raider Bryan Jennings Jr. and never looked back, scoring 28 points in the first quarter and 21 more in the second quarter for a 49-6 halftime lead.

The score by Jennings was the first of his three touchdowns in the game. He also scored on a 6-yard run in the second quarter and capped the game with a 13-yard scoring run in the fourth.

Greg Sanders, who finished with 104 yards on just 12 carries, also scored three touchdowns. He had a 25-yard run in the first quarter, a 9-yard run in the second quarter and a 14-yard run in the fourth.

The Threat defense was led by by former Horlick High School standout Matt Ferron, who got a safety early in the third quarter, and the Threat also had five interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Racine kicker T.J. Hearn made all of his 10 extra point attempts.

The Hawks (0-3) scored with six seconds left in the first half and also had a fumble return for a touchdown in the third quarter and a 76-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth.

The Threat return to action at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Ameche Field against the Lake County Steelers.

If you didn’t come to this blog to finish it, then exit out now, he doesn’t need you! (lol)

Q. Who are the “Dark side”, and what do they mean to you?

A. The “DARK SIDE” is ALL of my brothers that play defense. They’re mean, aggressive, vicious & ready to fight till the end; they have relentless heart & dedication! Every single one of those boys are my blood. I am here for them & make sure they all know that. They’re on point and the battle for me. They know I’m ready to back them up by any means necessary! No matter what the circumstances are…..we stick together.

Q. How do you manage 35 warriors when only 11 can be on the field at once?

A. It’s really tough honestly. I just have to remind them who’s in charge here & that I have a duty from the Owners/Head Coach that I have to play the BEST 11 on the field to WIN the game. This is not personal, it’s a business…after all is said & done, we are one unit. I don’t care what they did last year or last game. A good Coach looks toward the future & his future opponents. You scheme for every opponent, and never look behind. Looking behind is not a winning attitude & it will not win you a Championship! Certain players are good for certain situations.

Q. How has football impacted your life?

A. It had impacted my life in many ways. Football is a way of LIFE, some say it jokingly…but it’s true! It taught me how to be a man in different ways, how to accept a loss & shake the other man’s hand. It teaches you about family, brotherhood, and what type of person you are. If you quit football or any sport, 9 times out of 10, you’re a quitter in LIFE. It shows you, when times are tough, you have to dig deep, grind it out & show some heart! When you get knocked down, you have to bounce back up & do it again, till you defeat & conquer it….same as LIFE & the real world. You do that…the rewards in the end are beautiful!

Q. How have your personal experiences impacted your coaching techniques?

A. I was always raised to respect everyone as a man, but to receive my respect, you have to give it. I know, I don’t know everything about football & that’s how I succeed with coaching. Everything I teach to my players, I ask them in the end…will we be successful? What’s your opinion? If they don’t believe in what I’m coaching, then why even attempt it? We have a good communication level with each other, we don’t have any egos defensively. A big reason why I ask my players for their opinion is because they see the field differently. It’s 100% different out there on the field. When we communicate and we believe in each other, we become one & succeed together!

Q. The Pardo family has embraced the Threat outwardly more than any other family from the team that I’ve personally witnessed, can you explain why?

A. We are very family oriented. If you get one, you get all of us. This is something my father always instilled in us. Family supports family through easy times & tough times. Football has always been a subject we all have a common interest in. Football brings us together! You have 2 sons, 2 brothers & where ever WE go, the family will be there to support the Threat organization…..our family bond is tight.

Q. Tight like 4 butt cheeks?

A. You’re an idiot Booker. *both laugh*

Q. Right before your wedding you found out you had Bells Palsy, explain your battle with it and what it took to overcome it.

A. Funny you asked. It was tough at first, I didn’t know what was wrong with the left side of my face. I didn’t know how long it was going to take to heal. It was two weeks before my wedding! How was my soon-to-be wife going to react? How was it going to be when I returned to football? It was crazy! But, just like I said before… I’m not going to let ANYTHING stop me! I will defeat it someway & get over it. I actually joked about it myself at times. The biggest thing was…I didn’t care what others thought or said about it when they saw me. I knew in the end, I still had my wife, kids & family there on my side. That’s all I cared about. When I did comeback to practice, I felt normal. Coaching took away all the thoughts about Bells Palsy. Now, I’m all healed, I’m good…and either way, I was still going to be a “Beast” on the sidelines for the RACINE THREAT!

Q. Your son plays football and has even practiced with the Threat before, what is their take on the team?

A. My son loves this experience! I don’t have to ask him if he wants to come to the games or practice. He comes because he wants to. He’ll be a freshman at St. Cats this year. His attendance to our practices & being involved with the team show him what it takes to be a better player. It also shows how hard you have to train & work for what you want. It has shown him how to be a leader, and most importantly, sportsmanship and respect the game! He has a little chip on his shoulder being around the team & working out with adults. But don’t get it twisted, I’ll still be there to crack the whip on him if he gets out of line. *laughs*

Q. Your brother Jason was a player here before you came on as a coach. How much does it mean to you to be a part of his success?

A. Man, my brother is my best friend! If it wasn’t for him, I might not be here. It took a lot of convincing from him to get me here. I’m definitely glad he did it though. I thrive off of my brother’s success. When he does well & is successful….we all succeed. By “we all” I mean the Pardo family. We feed off of each other and we love to see each other succeed! Jay-P is my coach on the field! He knows what I’m thinking and vice versa. He can make any adjustment on field at anytime & I’m comfortable with it. We’ve coached with each other for a long time. He has my trust and he’s the last line of defense on the field. I’d honestly be lost without him on the field. Ya’ll just don’t know how much football we talk, scheme on & come up with all the time. We LOVE football!!

Q. You’ve brought on some familiar faces with you this season in the coaching staff, what is your history with them?

A. The few guys I brought in are people I can trust & know how to work together. Coach Dan Saldana is one my best friends and a brother. We’ve coached with each other for over 12 years. We both started in RYS as the coaches of the Seminoles. We put together some great teams. We’ve been thru some battles together! Collectively we bring almost 25yrs of coaching experience to the Threat, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of that? Coach Chlebos is new to coaching, but always told me he wanted to help so I gave him his shot. We both played youth football together and I am really glad he is here! He has put in lots of work & helped me when I haven’t been there….he is learning the ropes real fast!

Q. What value do you look for in a football player more than any other? How does it relate to that man OFF the field?

A. There are many values I look for in a player. I need a player who respects their fellow teammates & coaches. I like to see heart & dedication. I have no time for players who quit on their team, come to practice when they want, or talk back to coaches. I’m the type of coach that calls people out and holds them accountable. It’s not personal, but I just like to see what type of players I have. Are they going to quit, or are they going to prove that they’re better then what I’m saying. If they quit, then BYE, we don’t need em. Come prove me wrong! Don’t be that player who always has slick comments to say! Show it with your pads! If you’re not seeing the field, there’s probably a reason. Work hard, be coachable and beat out the man in front of you.

Q. All the Threat have to do to win a championship is _________. Fill in the blank for me.

A. Play like a FAMILY! Accept others help…we all can improve on something.

Q. Anything else you’d like to say?

A. The annual Raider/Threat game is a sticky situation, but here’s my take on it. Since everyone that sees me around town always ask me what I would do. Racine Threat & Racine Raiders…. PLEASE come to an agreement to play once a year! Here’s what we do….. both organizations take $1000.00 and donate the rest into getting either Horlick or Hammes field, field-turf. It’ll benefit the city of Racine! We could use that field for everyone! We could hold weekly youth football games and their Championship games. The City of Racine needs to look into this ASAP. There is no reason why we can’t make this an Annual game between both Racine teams. Think about the community and what the city would get out of this! A nice field for all of everyone! Lastly, thanks to Erik Olson, Jon Anderson & Kelly for your hard work & letting me be part of this Organization!

This weekend Rudy will be leading our defense against the Lake Geneva Generals in Lake Geneva! The game is Saturday at 7pm! He’ll be the big man barking out orders for all of his minions to carry out! There’ll be 30+ men chomping at the bit to go out there and prove to him that they BELONG on the field. If they get an opportunity, they better make the play. They KNOW they have to make the play! From the first practice it’s been an all out war to step on the field for every man on the defense. And at the end of the day, starter or backup, each man supports the next. There are NO individuals on our defense! They move as one, and Rudy has instilled that since the first practice. His defense will NOT be beaten, they have too much pride. As one unit, they will overcome any obstacle, and they will be the driving force to get us to the championship. Why? Because Rudy will not fail them, and they wouldn’t dare let him down!

Where do I start? First, my name is Jesse Booker. I’m a long time resident of Racine County who grew up in Mt. Pleasant on Prairie Dr right by Mt.Trashmore. To not waist too much of your time about myself…. I graduated from Case in 2000, went to Oshkosh for one year, and I’m ex military. I also have an amazing wife, and two wonderful children.

These blog posts are not about me though…. they’re about a group of men from your exact same community. These posts are about men who grew up as individuals, but have banded together as teammates. These entries are about are about a group of 60 gentlemen known as the Racine Threat!

Yup… the Racine Threat. You read it right… I know you haven’t heard of us. Quite a darn shame if you ask me, but you’re not alone. The two women from the Patch who granted me the ability to write these blogs never heard of us. Don’t feel bad, I’m here to educate you. I won’t walk you through a 2 hour history lesson, that’s what Google is for, lol… all I’ll say is, we’ve been around a decade…. and we have missed all of you.

These blog entries aren’t to necessarily give you a run down of the score, or a synopsis of the game… but to introduce you to the man behind the face mask. The man you work next to who doesn’t mention that he plays semi pro ball for the simple fact that you’ll say, “Oh for the Raiders?” because we ALWAYS have to respond, “No the OTHER Racine team, the Threat.”

Throughout the season I’ll be doing interviews of men from your communities to help shed light on the magic happening within our team. Hopefully this blog will be captivating enough to generate some positive energy within the community, and entertaining enough to get you excited to come attend some of our games.

Here is a link to a photo gallery from our last game…. Threat vs Mustangs

Do you recognize some faces? Do the names seem familiar? 95% of our roster is from this very community… the other team that you all know and love can’t say the same.

The outcome of our first game? We won 20-19…. here’s the play that sealed the deal. 4th and 18 from our own 23, 30 seconds left, down 5 ( score board clock went down in 3rd qtr & was not working. The refs were keeping time at this point)…….Game Winning TD If that’s not exciting enough to generate some interest… I don’t know what is.

Thank you so much for taking time to read, here’s too many more posts from me as long as you’ll come back and interact! Share this with a friend who may also be interested in keeping up with the REAL home town team… THE RACINE THREAT!

His outbursts are comical at times, but they’re motivated by the fire that burns inside of him. He lives and dies for this team. Everything in his life is dictated by what goes on with the 59 other men that surround him. His phone can’t be turned off when he sleeps, if he gets any rest. Why? Because 24 hours a day his brothers know he’s there if they need him. He’s been called on many times in the past, and he has done everything in his power to deliver. His name is Erik Olson. He is the Owner and starting right guard of the Racine Threat.

If I had any journalism experience, I’d take excerpts of the questions I asked him and write you a great story…. I don’t, and I won’t for the simple fact that… every question I asked had a great answer. I don’t want you to miss a thing!

Q. What the first thing that comes to mind when someone says “Who or What is the Racine Threat?”

A. We’re a TRUE home town team made up of many hard working every day guys that love the game of football.

Q. What would your ideal relationship with the community be?

A. I would like us to be a welcome and liked organization. I want the community to be proud of us, and to represent us whole heartedly! People don’t know us because we are that OTHER team. But we are your neighbors!! We live here, work here, shop here, and raise our families here too. We are Racine.

Q. Where did you grow up and how many people from that neighborhood are aware of what you’re doing now?

A. I grew up on the south side, off of Taylor ave. 19th and Flett were my stomping grounds. Knapp school area. Most people who are still there are aware. Our very own Coach Saldana, James “Herbie”, and Juan Ayala come form that same hood. Matter of fact my neighborhood was a huge athletic neighborhood. Several standout players that went to Park High School in the early to late 80′s and 90′s came from my hood.

Q. You’ve sacrificed a LOT for this team, what makes it all worth it?

A. To feel I’ve made a difference in this world by giving these guys the chance to play football. It also gives me a sense of accomplishment. The brotherhood and family like atmosphere are also another huge part. The honor of going to battle with my teammates in these games and the feeling of being someone important, relied on and respected all make it worth while.

Q. When your days as a player are done, how will you satisfy your NEED for football through this team?

A. I’ll try to grow the team’s identity and success. Putting time into things that I’d like to do now but cant, due to me playing. I’m still smoothing out the bumps.

Q. Would you be willing to change the name to the Kenosha Threat since we’re forced to play our home games there?

A. No!! I won’t be run out of this town! We’ve proven we can coexist. We just cant play at Horlick Field. I have faith that something will happen for us. All we need is a stadium like Ameche, (Kenosha Tremper) but in Racine. I dream of it…. something to call home in Racine would be an honor. This town is rich in sports history and we would like to be apart of that.

Q. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do as an owner?

A. I had to fire a friend. I had to let a man go who dedicated his free time to the team, but he didn’t share the same vision as myself. Not a good feeling.

Q. How do you have any time for YOU when you have to be a Father, an employee, a boyfriend, an owner and a football player?

A. I don’t. A lot of my personal time is this team. It consumes me. I live and breathe it. I’m what makes it tick. It’s really hard to just turn it off. It has become part or most of my life. I have learned to encompass it. Still I know I need to put more back into my girlfriend and our kids. They are what matters most to me. But then I wonder who I would be without football, it defines me.

Q. Your love for the team in undeniable…. you’re the beating heart of the franchise and the driving force behind it. Where does the passion come from?

A. It ties into who I’d be without football. I never want it to end. I like feeling relied on, like I can’t let the other 59 guys down. I was meant to do this.

Q. Your daughters are always around, how do you feel they perceive the team?

A. They love it in their own way. I know they are proud of me, I can see it in their eyes. I could see them some day being a very active part of the team in some manner.

Q. On your WORST day, in your darkest hour, who do you turn to?

A. My girlfriend Kelly. She’s been so supportive of me & she’s right by my side with me with this team. She helps out alot. She does a lot of things most people don’t hear of. She’s also helped me be a better person.

Q. Anything else you’d like to share?

A. I’d just like to thank Kelly, once again for all she does. I’d like to thank everyone that puts their time into the team. Most importantly I’d like to say thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters. Without these people we’re nothing!

His last statement is 100% true. Without you guys, all the blood sweat and tears that every player, coach and owner put into this semi pro football means nothing. We love the game of football, and we play it because it takes us back to a period of innocence. A time when nothing else mattered. As soon as you pull the jersey over the shoulder pads, strap up the helmet and step on the field… you’re free. But without you, the logo and team name are meaningless. Without the community, we’re just some guys throwing the ball around twice a week. We represent our city with honor. We put that logo on our helmets to show our unity. We travel out of town in our own vehicles to bring awareness around the Midwest of a town that we love. All Erik and the rest of us want is the same love in return! Erik isn’t just a player and the owner of the Racine Threat, he’s MORE THAN A THREAT!

The "Racine Bowl" is just around the corner

The “Racine Bowl” is just around the corner. The MidStates Football League announced Tuesday that the Racine Raiders will be among two teams it is accepting for the 2010 season.

Which means not only will a much-anticipated matchup between the Raiders and the defending MSFL champion Racine Threat become a reality this season, it could be the start of a long-standing annual rivalry.Because of budget concerns stemming from a sharp decline in attendance last season, the Raiders were forced to leave the North American Football League. Membership in that league requires several cost-prohibitive road trips each season, which the Raiders were finding increasingly difficult to cover as average attendance dipped to less than 1,000 last season.Had the Raiders defeated the St. Paul Pioneers in a quarterfinal game Oct. 24, they would have had to scramble to finance a trip to Washington for the semifinals and to Florida, if they would have advanced to the NAFL championship game. Raiders general manager Bob Marcado said neither trip would have been possible without significant outside donations and team members helping defray the expense.Joining the MSFL, which increases to 16 teams with the addition of the Raiders and Roscoe (Ill.) Rush, will help solve this issue since most teams in the league are based in Illinois.”We just can’t afford to be in the league we were in,” said 71-year-old Bob Milkie, who succeeded Joe Mooney as Raiders president last Wednesday. “You can’t make a commitment at the end of the year to go to Florida and play in the championship when the money isn’t there.”What you’re doing is jeopardizing the Racine Raiders to become non-existent, just like other teams that have put themselves in that position and folded.”The Raiders now find themselves in a position to start a rivalry with Threat. Erik Olson, a team owner, is looking forward to the challenge.”Are that beatable?” Olson said. “Well, of course. We were always overshadowed by them because they were this high marquee team and we were just starting out. Over the years, the demographic of the game and the teams and the players changed that.”

There was word today the Racine Raiders has been accepted into the MSFL. Along with the addition of the Raiders, the MSFL has also accepted 1 other team, the Roscoe Rush.

With the Raiders now being in the same league as the Threat, all the hype and talking that has been going on for the past couple years, will finally come to an end as these two teams will now be cross town rivals. There are also some questions that will still need to be answered, one of them being, will the Threat now be playing more games in town at Horlick Field? Will the addition of the Raiders to the MSFL also help the Threats fan base and get more recognition from the city of Racine? Time will only tell. All we know is the MSFL is gonna be a very interesting league this 2010 season.
